A picture is worth a thousand words and the images of the G7 summit in Hiroshima this weekend were a good example of this. Volodymyr Zelenskiy was pictured at the center of a "family portrait" with G7 leaders over the weekend, symbolizing their support for the Ukrainian president.

Just under 10 years ago, the G7 was the G8 – thenRussiawas a member of the group and President Vladimir Putin attended summits. Moscow was kicked out in 2014 after the invasion of Crimea.

Other photos showed Zelenskiy hugged by French President Emmanuel Macron, US President Joe Biden with his arm around him, and smiling and sharing handshakes with other leaders, including Canada's Justin Trudeau and Britain's Rishi Sunak.

The Russian ambassador to the US appears to have warned Washington that any attack on Crimea could be considered an attack on Russian territory by NATO after US President Joe Bidensaid he would support training for Ukrainian pilotson American F-16 fighter jets.

In comments published on the Embassy's Telegram channel, Anatoly Antonov wrote:

So far, Washington has resisted us… by proxy. However, every specialist knows that there is no infrastructure for the operation of F-16s in Ukraine, nor is there the required number of pilots and maintenance personnel.

What would happen if US fighters took off from NATO airfields controlled by foreign "volunteers"?

I would like to warn government representatives against ill-considered judgments about Crimea, especially in terms of "blessing" the Kiev regime for airstrikes on the peninsula.

Let me remind you that attacks on this area are considered by us as an attack on any other region of the Russian Federation. It is important that the United States is fully aware of the Russian response.

Volodymyr Zelenskystole the show at theG7-topwrites Patrick Wintour in his analysis of the weekend, with Zelenskiy's whirlwind round of diplomacy the culmination of a Ukrainian realization that they've been talking to the wrong people for months.

Yes, it is essential to continually keep the lines open to Ukraine's allies invested in the west and reap the benefits, such as Joe Biden's decision to finally lift his veto against Ukrainian pilots training to fly US-made F-16 fighter jets, but the West's identification with Ukraine's cause is nearing completion. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, ended her remarks by saying: “Ukrainian Slavic– Glory to Europe”.

But Ukraine has known for months that it is not telling its story clearly enough to the 40 or so non-aligned states that have abstained in successive UN General Assembly votes on the war.India, Brazil, China and as many as 20 African states sat on the sidelines in the most important votes.

Bakhmut remains 'epicenter' of fighting, Ukrainian forces say

Fighting in Bakhmut continues, Ukrainian forces said in their morning update after Russia claimed to have completed the "liberation" of the eastern city over the weekend. Confusion reigned as Ukrainian officials dismissed the claims.

“[In Bakhmut] the enemy continues to lead offensive actions. The battle for the town of Bakhmut continues," the armed forces said, adding that Russian forces had "tried in vain over the past day to recapture lost positions south of the [nearby] settlement of Ivanivske."Russiahad also conducted airstrikes on Bakhmut.

It was impossible to verify the conflicting accounts about the destroyed city, which has become symbolically important as a measure of which side has the resilience to prevail in the war at large.

(Video) Is control of Bakhmut significant in the Russia/Ukraine conflict?

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said he is "upset" that he and Volodymyr Zelenskiy did not meet at the G7 summit, adding that his Ukrainian counterpart did not seem interested in peace negotiations withRussia.

AFP reports:

Zelenskiy, who emerged from the Hiroshima summit with new diplomatic support and pledges for increased military aid, had sought a one-on-one meeting with Lula, who was accused of being soft on Russia over its invasion.

Both leaders said scheduling conflicts had prevented them from meeting - which Zelenskiy said likely left his Brazilian counterpart "disappointed".

“I was not disappointed. I was upset because I would like to meet with him to discuss the matter," Lula told a press conference before returning home from Japan.

But “Zelenskiy is grown up. He knows what he's doing," he added.

Lula said his team had scheduled a meeting with Zelenskiy on Sunday afternoon. But the Ukrainian leader arrived too late and his own agenda was full afterwards, he said.

Lula said he saw no point in meeting Zelenskiy now, saying that neither he nor Russian President Vladimir Putin seemed to want peace.

"For now, they are both convinced that they are going to win the war," he said.

Lula is pushing for peace talks and has suggested Brazil as a mediator, along with other "neutral" countries, including China and Indonesia.

But the veteran leftist was criticized last month when he accused the United States of "encouraging" the war.

After the White House accused him of "pursuing Russian and Chinese propaganda," Lula softened his rhetoric and said Brazil condemned Russia's invasion.

But on Monday he repeated his criticism.

US President Joe Biden, he said, is sending the message that “Putin must surrender and pay for everything he has destroyed”.

"That message doesn't help," he said.
