Elon Musk talks about his successor in a WSJ interview
WSJ
In an insightful hour-long interview in the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council, Elon Musk gave a rare insight into his thoughts on the complicated issue of succession. He framed the complexity of this challenge in a historical context, emphasizing that it is an age-old problem that has plagued not only corporations, but also nations, kings, prime ministers and presidents through the annals of history.
Identify potential successors
Musk revealed that he has identified potential successors he believes can lead proficiently after his tenure. He brought these individuals to the attention of the board and provided them with his personal recommendations. However, he clearly indicated that the final decision rests with the board. Musk noted, "They can choose to go in a different direction, but they know who my recommendation is."
An intriguing point of discussion during the interview revolved around the stewardship of the companies Musk has built. He expressed a deep sense of responsibility, noting, "The companies that I have founded and that I am collectively creating have enormous capacity, which is why stewardship of them is incredibly important." These comments underlined the enormous influence these companies exert on society and civilization.
The challenge of stewardship and control
Interestingly, Musk confessed hisopenness to outside suggestionscontrol of the companies, a rarity for the famously confident CEO. He admitted, "The control question is a much more difficult question, and something I struggle with, and I'm honestly open to ideas." This statement represented an unusual invitation to new insights into managing the future stewardship of his pioneering ventures.
Furthermore, Musk delved into his aspirations for his companies, with a special focus on Tesla, to make a positive contribution to humanity. One idea he shared was to create an educational institution that would exercise most of his voting rights. Still, he stressed that automatic takeover of control by his children was out of the question, especially if they had no interest or ability to run the companies effectively.
Tesla's contributions to renewable energy
Turning to Tesla's performance, Musk painted a vivid picture of the company's important role in accelerating theemergence of sustainable energy. He claimed, "Tesla's original goal was to accelerate the advent of renewable energy, and I think we've done that in a significant way." He also shared his satisfaction that other industry leaders have recognized Tesla's pioneering role in this revolution.
On the topic of Tesla's pursuitself-driving technology,Musk expressed optimism about achieving substantial progress within the year. He also predicted that this technology milestone would usher in substantial positive cash flow for the company.
Musk's extended discussion offered illuminating reflections on the critical issue of succession planning and Tesla's lasting influence. Tesla
Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped a major piece of news during his recent appearance on the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council. Tesla is preparing to announce another gigafactory location before the end of this year. This future development underscores Tesla's continued aggressive expansion on a global scale.

Elon Musks Wall WSJ-interview
India: a potential destination amid challenges
Recent posts fromReutersadded fuel to this speculative fire. The news agency reported that Tesla has proposed to the Indian government the possibility of setting up a production unit in the country. The idea of a Tesla factory ties in with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing "Make in India" initiative. However, previous talks were halted over disagreements over India's high import taxes, and there is no concrete confirmation that the proposal will go through.
At the same time, another potential contender for Tesla's new gigafactory location has been suggested byindustry observers - Canada. The North American country offers an attractive proposition due to its commitment to clean energy initiatives, abundant resources and proximity to Tesla's home market of the United States. However, as with India, there has been no official confirmation, and discussions of a potential Canadian gigafactory are speculative at this point.
Anticipating the impact of Tesla's expansion
What is definitive from Musk's announcement is that Tesla's ambitious global expansion plans are well underway. With theGigafactory in Mexicoon the road and another location to be revealed soon, Tesla continues to reinforce its mission to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy. The choice of location for the new gigafactory will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the local economy, Tesla's growth trajectory and the global EV industry.
One of Tesla's goals is to produce approximately 20 million vehicles annually. Elon Musk previously stated:
"Eventually we will probably build at least 10 or 12 Gigafactories and those will be really big Gigafactories aiming for an average output of 1.5 to 2 million units per factory, which is huge."
Tesla's vision of a sustainable future and its commitment to increasing production capacity reflects the company's growth and the growth of the clean energy movement worldwide.
